Age Scotland’s Big Survey of Older People 2021
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the results of Age Scotland’s Big Survey of Older People 2021; understands that, early in the year, the charity, along with its research partners, Scotinform Ltd, surveyed 3,562 people over 50 from across the country, including the Mid Scotland and Fife region, to capture their experiences and better understand how COVID-19 has impacted their lives; notes that it also enquired about many other areas of life, including health and wellbeing, housing, ageism, the representation of older people, their financial challenges and looking to the future; believes that this new and extensive research ultimately provides a real-world sample of people over 50 and a snapshot of what it is like to be an older person living in Scotland today; acknowledges that the findings have provided a wealth of information and insight into older people's lives, not least with the conclusion that COVID-19 has had a huge impact on levels of loneliness; is concerned at the results suggesting that 53% of respondents stated that the pandemic had made them feel lonelier, with 10% saying they feel lonely all or most of the time; understands that this amounts to nearly a quarter of a million over-50s; is troubled to learn that a third of respondents said that they felt that their mental health had deteriorated over the last few years and that 87% said that either they or someone they know has been the target of a scam, and notes the calls for plans to be put in place urgently to ensure that what it sees as these myriad trends may be reversed.
