University of Stirling's Outstanding Results in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Stirling on its performance in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF); understands that the REF is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions, the results of which drive the allocation of public funding for research; acknowledges that REF 2021 highlighted that 87% of the university's research had an outstanding or very considerable impact on society, and more than 80% of the university's research was categorised as either world leading or internationally excellent; understands that the university's Institute of Aquaculture was ranked first in the UK for impact in the field of agriculture, veterinary and food science, with 100% of its research having had an outstanding impact, that 100% of research from biological and environmental sciences was rated as having had either an outstanding or a very considerable impact, which ranked it joint-12th in the UK in the field of geography and environmental studies, and also that the university's social sciences research ranked third in Scotland and 23rd in the UK for social work and social policy, with 88% of research deemed world leading or internationally excellent; notes that further details of the university’s performance can be found on the university website; considers that these are inspiring results, which underline the critical contribution that the University of Stirling is making, particularly to communities in the Forth Valley, and commends the university’s principal, all of its staff and students in addition to everyone involved, on these exceptional and exemplary results.
