The motion

That the Parliament sends its congratulations to Tom Brown, from Lochore, who was awarded the Balvenie Medal at the 2022 Glenfiddich Piping Championships; notes that the championships, run by the National Piping Centre and funded by the William Grant Foundation, are held annually at Blair Castle in Perthshire; understands that the championships are held to inspire the world's finest exponents of Ceòl Mòr or Piobaireachd (the great music) and Ceòl Beag or light music (the little music); notes that the Balvenie Medal is not a competition medal, but was instead introduced to the championships in 1985 to be awarded to someone who has demonstrated a significant service to piping; recognises Tom’s devoted service to piping through many years of tutoring at Lochgelly High School, which has inspired generations of pipers, some of whom now compete at the highest international level, and sends its best wishes for the continued success of participants in the championships that honours the greatest musicians of the national instrument.
