Remembering Doddie Weir OBE

The motion

That the Parliament expresses its condolences at the passing of Doddie Weir, at the age of 52, on 26 November 2022; notes that Doddie was born in Edinburgh and educated at Stewart’s Melville College, who he played rugby for, and the Scottish Agricultural College; further notes that he started his rugby career at Melrose RFC; recognises that he gained 61 caps for the Scotland national team in the 1990s, scoring two tries against the All Blacks, the only Scot to have ever achieved this; notes his outstanding contributions to the British and Irish Lions; commends the naming of the Doddie Weir Cup, which is contested annually between Scotland and Wales; understands that his diagnosis of motor neuron disease (MND) motivated him to raise awareness and money, in excess of £8 million, through his charitable foundation My Name’5 Doddie; recognises what it considers the huge power of work this has done to improve the lives of those with MND; expresses thanks for the incredible contributions Doddie Weir has made to sport and charity throughout his life, and expresses condolences to his friends and family at the sad news of his passing.
