Doddie Weir

The motion

That the Parliament pays tribute to rugby legend Doddie Weir, who died on 26 November 2022 aged just 52; recognises Doddie’s many achievements across his lifetime, including as a former Scotland international rugby player, capped 61 times between 1990 and 2000; pays its respects to Doddie, who, following his diagnosis with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2016, it considers showed enormous strength, resilience and determination to raise awareness of this debilitating disease among the wider public; notes that Doddie established the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which has made an immense contribution to the field of MND research, raising, it understands, more than £10 million, and continuing to work towards its goal of a world free of MND; acknowledges Doddie’s links to the Borders, having played for Melrose RFC and Borders Reivers, and his work in the Borders community recognised alongside his services to rugby and MND research with an OBE in 2019; offers sincere condolences to his family, and hopes that they can take some comfort from the fact of Doddie’s incredible legacy towards the treatment of and finding a cure for MND.
