Aberdeen-based Professor Commissioned to Compose New Music for the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Aberdeen-based Professor Paul Mealor, who has been commissioned to compose new music for the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort, which will take place on 6 May 2023; understands that Paul, who has worked at the University of Aberdeen as a professor in composition since 2003, will be composing alongside Judith Weir and Tarik O'Regan for the event, which is set to take place at Westminster Abbey; notes that Paul has composed for royal ceremonies in the past, including the Royal Wedding ceremony of His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey in 2011, where more than two billion people heard his motet, Ubi Caritas; understands that Paul also composed a number of works for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, having been appointed as an Officer of the Venerable Order of St John by the late monarch in January 2018; further understands that Paul’s music has entered the repertoire of choirs and singers across the globe, with his music being described by The New York Times as “Music of deep spiritual searching that always asks questions, offers answers and fills the listener with hope”, and wishes Paul and all those taking part in the Coronation the very best of luck in what promises to be a special day.
