War Graves Week 2023
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges War Graves Week; understands that this event, which for 2023 is running from 20 to 28 May, is an annual celebration of the tireless work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), across the UK and around the world; acknowledges that the week includes events and tours, of which there are 25 in Scotland alone, as well as many other opportunities for visitors to discover more about what the CWGC does and how; understands that, for 2023, more UK sites have been added to War Graves Week, in addition to tours available in France, Belgium, Italy and Malta; notes that the CWGC’s mission is to ensure that those who died in service, or as a result of conflict, are commemorated so that they, and the human cost of war, are remembered for ever; acknowledges that the commission is a global leader in commemoration, founded by Royal Charter in 1917, and that its members work on behalf of the governments of Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom, and commends the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s tireless and unstinting endeavours for the commemoration of the 1.7 million men and women from the Commonwealth who lost their lives in the two world wars.
