Scottish Opera's 60th Anniversary Season

The motion

That the Parliament commends and celebrates what it sees as the outstanding range of productions staged by Scottish Opera, which was founded by Sir Alexander Gibson, in its 60th anniversary season, and the leadership provided by general director, Alex Reedijk and music director, Stuart Stratford; recognises the diverse and dynamic performances performed during Scottish Opera's 60th season in 2022-23, which included the internationally-acclaimed new production of Golijov's Ainadamar, which will be seen in New York at the Metropolitan Opera House, an open-air performance of Bernstein's Candide, an acclaimed and rare performance, in its entirety, of Puccini's Il trittico, directed by Sir David McVicar and Mozart's Don Giovanni, in the first revival of Sir Thomas Allen's production since its premiere in 2013; notes that performances of Bizet's Carmen, directed by John Fulljames, which it understands is a confident and courageous updated new production of this classic opera, concludes Scottish Opera's landmark 60th season; commends Scottish Opera for its February and March 2023 "Opera Highlights" tour, which is underpinned by the company's commitment to ensure that opera is brought to people's doorsteps and enjoyed in local communities across Scotland, with 60 locations chosen to celebrate the 60th anniversary season; congratulates Scottish Opera for, it believes, building on the legacy of musical excellence, high-quality entertainment and opera that people in Scotland have been able to enjoy in its 60th year, and in the spirit established by Sir Alexander Gibson in 1962; acknowledges that Scottish Opera has confirmed that its 2023-24 season will include Stauss's Daphne, Verdi's La traviata and the return of Sir Thomas Allen's production of Rossini's The Barber of Seville; wishes the company every success in what it believes will be a fantastic 61st year, cementing further its international reputation, and acknowledges what it sees as the excellence achieved by the entire company, in all the various creative arts represented, including those behind the scenes in costume and wig design and making, set design and construction, lighting, sound, pyrotechnics, props and all other back stage and front of house activity.
