Renowned Kirkcaldy Astronomer to Receive Honorary Degree at St Andrews University
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Professor Anneila Sargent, as she is set to receive an honorary degree at the University of St Andrews graduation celebrations in June 2023; recognises that Professor Sargent is an internationally acclaimed astronomer who grew up in Burntisland and was educated at Kirkcaldy High School, before graduating from the University of Edinburgh; understands that she has spent over five decades living and working in the USA, and has sat on the United States National Science Board, the team of academics that advises Congress and the President; notes that Professor Sargent’s career has included serving as president of the American Astronomical Society, and chair of NASA’s Space Science Advisory Committee and the US National Research Council (NRC) Board of Physics and Astronomy; further notes that she also served on the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council, is an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, and was a member of the US National Science Board, which was a presidential appointment from 2011 to 2022; commends Professor Sargent for her services to astronomy, and wishes her all the best for the graduation ceremony and the future.
