The Flying Scotsman’s Centenary and Journey to Aberdeen

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the visit of the Flying Scotsman, the first train to officially reach 100mph, to Aberdeen on 3 July 2023; notes that this is the Flying Scotsman’s 100th year, with the locomotive first entering service on 24 February 1923; understands that it was designed as part of the A1 class, the most powerful steam locomotives used by London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at the time; recognises that, in 1924, the engine was selected to star in a London exhibition and named the Flying Scotsman after the daily 10.00 am London to Edinburgh rail service of the same name; understands that this exhibition made the Flying Scotsman famous around the world and that it went on to feature in many more publicity events for LNER; notes that, in 1928, the Flying Scotsman was fitted with a new type of tender, the first of its kind, with corridor access, this meant that a new crew could take over without the train having to stop, which allowed it to haul the first ever non-stop London to Edinburgh service on 1 May 1928, reducing journey times significantly; understands that, on 30 November 1934, the Flying Scotsman became the first train to officially reach 100mph; recognises that the Flying Scotsman still holds the world record for the longest ever non-stop journey by a steam locomotive, with a 422-mile trip across Australia in 1989; further recognises that the Flying Scotsman was the first steam locomotive to circumnavigate the globe; believes that the Flying Scotsman is one of the most famous steam engines in the world, with extensive tours across the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and trips hauling the prestigious Orient Express Pullman train; notes the extensive restoration works, which took place between 2006 and 2016 at the National Railway Museum in York; celebrates the Flying Scotsman as a brilliant feat of British engineering, which has had a remarkable 100 years of service, and wishes the National Railway Museum and the Flying Scotsman all the best for the future.
