Celebrating Scotland’s Grouse Moors
The motion
That the Parliament celebrates, on 12 August 2023, known as the Glorious Twelfth, what it sees as the vital contribution that grouse moor management makes to Scotland’s rural economy and biodiversity; understands that Scotland’s grouse shooting industry supports over 1,000 full-time jobs and generates almost £25 million for the rural economy; notes that the Glorious Twelfth marks the culmination of what it considers a year of hard work undertaken by gamekeepers and land managers in promoting sustainable grouse moor management; recognises that grouse moors boost biodiversity, providing important refuges for many endangered ground-nesting birds, including lapwing, curlew and capercaillie; understands that, without careful management and predator control, this land would be more susceptible to wildfires and biodiversity loss, harming Scotland’s natural environment; appreciates the work of organisations such as the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) and Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) in promoting the hard work of those who manage Scotland’s grouse moors, and the benefits that they bring to the countryside, and wishes all rural workers in Scotland’s uplands the very best for the season ahead.
