20th Anniversary of the Cairngorms National Park

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Cairngorms National Park; understands that the UK’s largest national park is spread across the regions of Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, Moray, Angus, and Perth and Kinross; further understands that the park contains four of the five highest mountains in Britain and over 50 other Munros, nine different Natural Nature Reserves, three of Scotland’s mighty rivers, including the Dee, Don and Spey, over half of the country’s surviving Caledonian Forest, and other renowned natural features including lochs and wetlands; considers that the internationally recognised status of a national park has vast benefits, including bringing investment to conserve the wild landscape of the Cairngorms, as well as being the habitat of an extensive range of wildlife, including, it understands, a quarter of the UK's most threatened animals, insects, plants and fungi; recognises what it sees as the physical and mental health advantages of the national park in encouraging activities such as walking, hiking, cycling and skiing across the unique landscape of the Cairngorms; acknowledges the impact of the national park on tourism to the area, encouraging almost two million annual visitors and generating employment and large sums for the local economy of rural Scotland, and sends its best wishes to the park authority staff and rangers, and the countless volunteers who work hard to preserve this truly special area.
