World Alzheimer’s Day 2023

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that 21 September every year is World Alzheimer’s Day around the world; understands that this event comprises an international campaign involving myriad organisations, including Alzheimer Scotland, which is aimed at raising awareness of and to challenge the common stigma that surrounds Alzheimer-related dementia; understands that Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that impairs memory and other mental functions, and is the most common form of dementia that generalises memory loss and loss of other essential cognitive abilities that are serious enough to interfere with an individual’s daily life; recognises that the first Alzheimer’s month campaign was launched in 2012 and, notwithstanding this, previous studies have shown that an average of two out of three people globally have little or no understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and associated dementia in their countries; accepts the view that, since its inception, the impact of World Alzheimer’s Month is increasing, however, the stigmatisation and lack of information surrounding dementia remains a global problem that, it believes, calls for global action; understands that individuals often consider this disease to be a normal part of ageing; believes that, while this may not be entirely true, a substantial risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease is increasing age, the probabilities of which are increasing with the steadily increasing ageing population, which is evident by the majority of Alzheimer’s patients being 65 years or older; considers, however, that this does not completely classify the disease as an elderly disease, and commends the work of Alzheimer organisations, including Alzheimer Scotland, in their research and care work for the benefit of those living with the condition, as well as their relatives, friends and carers.
