The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges National Cholesterol Month, which runs from 1 to 31 October and is an entire month, highlighted by HEART UK, which is devoted to raising awareness of the dangers of high cholesterol; considers that cholesterol is a fatty substance, which is needed in the cells of the body, however that too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to a build-up in arteries, which increases the risk of heart attack; further considers that a diet that is high in fibre will reduce the risk of heart disease and help to keep cholesterol healthy; understands that oats contain a type of soluble fibre known as beta-glucan, which can lower cholesterol; notes recommendations that, as the weather becomes cooler, and diet tolerances permitting, starting the day with a bowl of porridge is an ideal way to introduce oats into the diet; believes that saturated fats can contribute to high cholesterol and that swapping saturated fats for unsaturated fats, such as oily fish, extra virgin olive oil, rapeseed oil and avocados, can help to increase levels of good cholesterol, and commends the work of organisations, such as HEART UK and British Heart Foundation, in highlighting the fundamental importance of improving heart and circulatory health.
