The motion

That the Parliament considers that 1 to 31 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023; understands that, approximately every 10 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK; acknowledges that, especially during this month, many organisations, such as Breast Cancer Now, Breast Cancer UK, Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie and Cancer Research UK, hold events and awareness days to raise funds and to highlight the importance of regular checks; understands that the advice is that, following self-checks, if anything unusual is discovered, even if no serious symptoms present themselves, a doctor should be visited; further understands that this can then involve a doctor carrying out a manual exam and thereafter arranging for a mammogram, which charities say is painless and only takes about 10 minutes; understands that slight pain can also be a sign of a benign cyst but that it is always better to be sure; considers that, in all cases, early detection is key and can be a life-saver, and notes the recommendations from many related organisations to make a mammogram appointment during Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023, with the option of taking a friend or family member along for peace of mind.
