New Chancellor for Glasgow Caledonian University

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE on her appointment as the new Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University; notes that Dr Imafidon replaces Dr Annie Lennox OBE who stepped aside in 2023; understands that the role of Chancellor includes formal and ceremonial duties, conferring degrees on students and the promotion of the university’s ambitions and vision; believes that Dr Imafidon, an honorary graduate of Glasgow Caledonian, already recognised as a great champion for the university’s students, will make an exceptional figurehead; understands that Dr Imafidon is recognised as one of the UK’s most influential women in tech and is a strong advocate of diversifying talent in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); recognises what it sees as Dr Imafidon’s impressive academic journey, passing her GCSEs at the age of 10, being the youngest girl to pass A-level computing at the age of 11, and earning a Master's degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Oxford at the age of 20; further recognises her numerous accolades, including winning the UK IT Industry and British Computer Society’s Young IT Professional of the Year in 2013 and the award of an MBE in 2017 for her services to young women and STEM sectors; understands that Dr Imafidon is co-founder of the award-winning Stemettes, a social enterprise inspiring the next generation of females in STEM roles, and is a sought-after presenter and keynote speaker, who, it understands, continues to make significant contributions to the advancement of women in technology; notes that Dr Imafidon will be installed during a University graduation ceremony in July 2024, and wishes her all the best in her new post.
