Medical Degrees at the University of St Andrews

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement that medical students at the University of St Andrews will now be able to complete their clinical training and primary medical qualification in Fife; understands that the university and NHS Fife have confirmed a new partnership to make this possible; notes that students previously had to leave Fife in order to undertake clinical training under the supervision of other medical schools; further notes that the passage by the Parliament of the University of St Andrews (Degrees in Medicine and Dentistry) Act 2021 was necessary to allow the university to hold exams and award degrees in medicine and dentistry; commends the university for what it sees as its consistent work towards this goal, including securing approval for the new five-year medical degree from the General Medical Council earlier in March 2024; believes that the partnership between the university and NHS Fife will enhance education and training capacity, grow research capability and provide a platform to enable delivery of new advances in healthcare, innovative discoveries, techniques and medications; expresses its hope that this development will result in better services and outcomes for patients throughout Fife, and will help NHS Fife towards being recognised with teaching board status, and wishes the students and staff who will take part in the new programme every success.
