Contaminated Blood Scandal

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges what it sees as the tragic impact of the contaminated blood scandal, which reportedly affected 3,000 people in Scotland, who, after receiving contaminated blood, were infected with HIV or hepatitis C between 1970 and 1991; recognises campaigner and pastor, Bob Strachan, from Jedburgh, whose father died of HIV after contracting the disease in Aberdeenshire from a contaminated blood transfusion, who now, it believes, finally has closure on what happened to his family four decades later; understands that, across Scotland, people and campaigners alike whose lives have been blighted by the contaminated blood scandal finally have the recognition that it believes they deserve, after battling tirelessly for the truth for so long; expresses deep gratitude to former High Court judge, Sir Brian Langstaff, for his leadership and dedication over the past six years in uncovering the truth through the public inquiry, and echoes Sir Brian’s words that "lives, dreams, friendships, families and finances were destroyed" as a consequence of this tragedy, and commends the UK Government for providing the necessary and deserved compensation to all those adversely affected by what it considers to be this national disgrace.
