Jack Vettriano OBE

The motion

That the Parliament notes with great sadness what it regards as the untimely passing of the Scottish artist, Jack Vettriano OBE, on 1 March 2025 at his apartment in Nice; understands that Jack, who was born Jack Hoggan on 17 November 1951 in Methil, Fife, was a self-taught artist; notes that he left school at 16 years of age to become a mining engineer and, for his 21st birthday, was given a set of watercolour paints and, from then on, spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint; further notes that he drew inspiration from works at Kirkcaldy Galleries, studying paintings from artists such as Samuel Peploe and William McTaggart; believes that his breakthrough came in 1998 when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual show and both sold on the first day, thus inspiring him to become a full-time artist; considers that, while often dismissed by critics, his works garnered international acclaim, leading to exhibitions in cities such as Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and New York; acknowledges that his OBE was awarded in 2003 for services to visual arts; notes that his work rarely fails at auction, which was exemplified by The Singing Butler, which sold at auction in 2004 for £744,500, a record at the time, while reproductions of the painting remain the best-selling art print in the UK, and posthumously commends Mr Vettriano for, it considers, being the nation’s most successful artist during his lifetime, with his prints outselling those from artists such as Klimt and Monet.
