Motion · S6M-17652 · 22 May 2025
Congratulating Lord Gove of Torry
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Michael Gove on being created Lord Gove of Torry; understands that the title honours the Torry community, his late father, Ernest, whose fishing business once landed its catch in the shadow of the Torry Battery, and his mother Christine; notes his christening at St Fittick’s Church and his Aberdeen journey through Sunnybank and Kittybrewster primaries to Robert Gordon’s College, before he swapped King Street for Fleet Street as a trainee at the Press & Journal; acknowledges his lifelong affection for Aberdeen Football Club, trusting that memories of the Red Army surging up the Merkland Road End and the spirit of Gothenburg ’83 will accompany him to the red benches of the House of Lords; notes the cultural span of Aberdeen from Pittodrie to O’Neill’s off Belmont Street, whose dance floor has already felt the full flourish of his footwork, and wishes Lord Gove of Torry every success as he undertakes his new duties.
