Retirement of Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli as Principal and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Glasgow

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the retirement of Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli as the 50th Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow; congratulates him on a 16-year tenure leading the university, where he graduated with an MA (Hons) in Political Economy in 1984 and took a PhD in Economics in 1989, followed by an academic career as a lecturer and professor of economics until his appointment as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University in 2007; recognises what it sees as his role in strengthening Scotland’s international standing in research and higher education since his return to the University of Glasgow as Principal and Vice-Chancellor in 2009, most notably through his role as Chair of the Russell Group of UK research-intensive universities between 2017 and 2020; acknowledges that he was knighted in 2017 for his services to economics and higher education; further acknowledges that he has advised numerous international bodies throughout his career, including the European Commission and the World Bank, and has also served in advisory roles with the UK and Scottish governments, as well as committees and commissions of the House of Commons and the Scottish Parliament, and thanks Sir Anton for what it believes has been his prodigious contribution to academia and public service in Glasgow and Scotland.
