Applauding Scotland’s College Sector

The motion

That the Parliament applauds the work of Scotland’s College Sector; understands that it comprises 24 public colleges grouped into 13 regions, including Forth Valley College and Fife College in the Mid Scotland and Fife region, with each region having a strategic body for coordination, which collectively deliver education and training to over 200,000 students annually; understands that, managed by the Scottish Funding Council, colleges focus on vocational training, as well as modern apprenticeships, supporting around 14,420 students, with a strong focus on skills development for the workforce; believes that they also provide pathways to university, as well as acting as key community anchors and partners for business; notes that the sector is represented by Colleges Scotland, which is the collective voice of the colleges sector that supports and champions the sector by leading and influencing policy, enhancing and maintaining strong partnerships and demonstrating its positive impacts, and acknowledges that Colleges Scotland is calling for the reversal of what the body sees as years of underinvestment in the college sector, which, it believes, has been evidenced by the recent Audit Scotland report, Scotland’s Colleges 2024, before the end of the current parliamentary session, in addition to a commitment to the sustainable funding of colleges in the 2026-27 draft Budget.
