Remembering Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe
The motion
That the Parliament notes the death of the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe at the age of 78; extends its sincere condolences to her family, friends and all those who knew her; recognises her many years of public service as a Member of Parliament, government minister and later Member of the European Parliament; acknowledges that she was a politician of strong convictions who remained steadfast in her beliefs throughout her career; further acknowledges her commitment to freedom of speech, democratic debate and public service; notes her willingness to speak openly on matters of conscience, faith and national identity, often in the face of what it sees as significant criticism; recognises the enduring Christian faith that informed much of her public life and work; believes that her determination to defend her sincerely held views earned respect from many, including those with whom she disagreed, and pays tribute to her contribution to public life, which it believes will be remembered by many.
