Congratulations to Scottish Museum of Lead Mining
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the decision by the Scottish Executive to agree funding of up to £30,000 to enable the Scottish Museum of Lead Mining in Dumfries and Galloway to reopen its doors to the public on 31 March 2007; notes the work of the museum, which opened in 1974 and attracts around 12,000 visitors every year, in preserving around 300 years’ worth of mining heritage; acknowledges that the Wanlockhead Miners’ Library is the second oldest subscription library in Scotland and indeed Europe, was established on 1 November 1756 by 32 men and houses a stock of ancient books that will continue to be made available to the public, and recognises that this museum provides a unique understanding of one of Scotland’s oldest industries for current and future generations.
