His Excellency Dr Bingu Wa Mutharika and the African Union
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates His Excellency Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, on his election by the General Assembly of the African Union to serve as Chairperson of the African Union; notes that President Mutharika is the first Malawi head of state to hold this honour since the formation of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 and its successor body, the African Union, in 2002; shares President Mutharika’s ambition to “move the continent from poverty to prosperity and to position it as an effective player in the global arena”; wishes him every success in his term of office, and looks forward to Scotland and Malawi continuing to work together to support Malawi and Africa's development.
