Concerns at Coastguard Staffing Levels
The motion
That the Parliament is concerned at reports that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Belfast, which took over responsibility for coordinating rescue efforts off the west coast of Scotland following the closure of MRCC Clyde in 2012, is staffed at worryingly low levels; understands that, on 80% of shifts, MRCC Belfast is staffed at below risk-assessed levels, compared with 18% for the centres for the rest of the UK; believes that having low staffing levels puts lives at risk, and notes calls for the UK Government to urgently assess the situation and rethink its coastguard reforms.
