Allowing Afghan Interpreters to Escape Persecution and Resettle in the UK

The motion

That the Parliament considers that the UK prides itself on fulfilling its responsibilities both nationally and internationally; recognises the delivery to the UK Government of a petition signed by more than 60,000 calling for Afghan interpreters who worked with UK forces to be given the right to settle in the UK; appreciates the vital role that Afghan interpreters have played in supporting personnel during the conflict in Afghanistan, often in extremely dangerous circumstances; believes that this ensured that the soldiers were able to communicate effectively not only with communities, but also with suspected terrorists and prisoners; understands that the interpreters have now become targets for the Taliban and other organisations; considers that, due to weaknesses in the immigration system, many criminals and other such undesirable people are able to remain in the country while the interpreters, who it believes have earned the right to live in the UK are unable to do so, and believes that it is imperative that the UK acts swiftly to accept its moral responsibility to the interpreters by offering them the opportunity to resettle in the country.
