The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the recent analysis by the Financial Times (FT), which, it understands, confirms that, based on the GDP figure per head of population, an independent Scotland would be one of the world’s top 20 countries, ahead of the rest of the UK, France and Italy; notes that, in terms of overall GDP, the FT claims that it would be in the top 50; understands that the analysis suggests that, even without oil, Scotland would still be one of the wealthiest countries and that, with independence, it would have stronger public finances than the rest of the UK; notes that the FT concluded that an independent Scotland could “expect to start with healthier state finances than the rest of the UK”; welcomes the newspaper’s claim that, based on it having £98 billion of exports in 2012, Scotland would be the world's 34th largest exporter, and considers that this position would be enhanced if the country had the powers set out in Scotland’s Future: Your Guide to an Independent Scotland to better support exporters and to promote its products worldwide.
