Child Support Changes Threaten the Most Vulnerable

The motion

That the Parliament is aware of upcoming changes to child maintenance payments; understands that these will see a 4% charge on child support paid through the state system; believes that this is intended to be an incentive for parents to voluntarily agree child support without government involvement; supports the rights of parents to voluntarily enter private agreements, but expresses concern that financially penalising people who are unable to do so could unfairly hit people in difficult situations, such as trying to leave abusive relationships or where the other parent is unreasonably refusing payment; understands that no maintenance will be paid when care is shared equally, regardless of differences in incomes between parents, and, in light of these concerns, calls on the UK Government to consider the impact of its proposals.
