TV Programme to Explore the Impact of WW1 on the Scottish Countryside
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the news that BBC Scotland will air a special programme on 11 April 2014 regarding the effects that the First World War had on the Scottish countryside, specifically in the Mearns; recognises that this programme is based on the novel, Sunset Song, by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, which includes such historical elements as the Battle of the Somme; notes that the airing of this programme coincides with this year serving as the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the war; encourages people across Scotland to view this programme, as it may serve as a valuable informative tool by which a greater understanding of the effects that the First World War had on Scotland and its various regions may be gained, and hopes that this programme may help bring about greater public awareness of the Mearns and its rich history.
