Protecting the Universal Service Obligation

The motion

That the Parliament notes what it sees as the importance of a six-days-a-week universal service obligation (USO) for mail deliveries; welcomes the Scottish Government’s position set out in the white paper on independence that, with independence, the USO will be maintained; expresses its continued concerns that UK Government privatisation of the Royal Mail has put the USO at risk; considers that, following EU requirements for competition to be introduced to the postal market, any such competition should take place on a fair basis without companies being able to cherry-pick delivery routes, and believes that Ofcom should act to ensure that any competition does not pose a threat to the USO.
