The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the 10 pupils from St Aidan’s High School and Coltness High School in Wishaw on being selected to take part in what is expected to be a life-changing polar expedition across Greenland taking place in April 2015 with Craig Mathieson of the Polar Academy, who led Scotland’s first expedition to the South Pole in 2004, enduring temperatures of -70C; notes that the expedition will be a 10-day trek in which the pupils, aged between 14 and 17, will be responsible for the navigation and decision-making and each of the pupils will be responsible for leading one day of the expedition; believes that the selection procedure was a gruelling, challenging and transformative experience, initially involving potentially 500 young people and their families and which involved being capsized in a kayak and tying a series of complex knots underwater; understands that the pupils participating are Sara Dunn, Morgan Healy, Paul Shuttleworth, Carla Brawley, Mateusz Trojnar, Holly Stewart, Jodie Thorburn, Colin Myles, Jack Inglis and Rhiannon Walker, representing five pupils from each school in different year groups, and wishes the pupils every success with their expedition.
