Girlguiding’s Girls' Attitudes Survey 2014
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the recent publication of Girlguiding’s Girls' Attitudes Survey 2014, which provides a snapshot of the views of 1,405 girls and young women aged from seven to 21 from across the UK, including many from North East Scotland; understands that it is the largest in-depth annual assessment of its kind and reveals a great deal about their experiences, opinions, feelings and wellbeing; notes that it reports that 76% of the 11 to 21-year-olds who were surveyed said that they know girls who self-harm, 85% have experienced sexism and almost half sometimes “feel ashamed” of the way that they look; notes that the survey found that many are worried about the way the media portrays women and that 57% believe that politicians do not listen to them; believes that it provides an informative and thought-provoking, but at times worrying, insight into girls' experiences in growing up; values its highlighting the changes that the girls and young women believe would improve their lives, and is encouraged by what it sees as their shared determination to realise their rights and opportunities, overcome challenges and make a difference.
