The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Shetland branch of the Samaritans on celebrating its 30th anniversary; understands that the organisation was founded by Chad Varah in 1953, its aim being to provide support to anyone in emotional distress or at risk of suicide; understands that the new Linda Rose House building on Charlotte Street in Lerwick was made possible by a substantial legacy left to the Samaritans by Linda Robertson from Lerwick in the hope that someday it would be able to own its own premises; acknowledges that there are now over 200 branches across the UK and Ireland, run by over 21,200 trained volunteers, with the Samaritans being entirely dependent on voluntary support; commends the life-saving work of the chairperson, Edith Leask, and the team of volunteers at the Shetland branch, and hopes that this vital service continues to offer support for all those in need.
