The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the opening of Grieg Seafood Hjaltland’s Millbrook Hatchery in Shetland; understands that the state-of-the-art hatchery employs the latest technology in water recirculation, allowing for the production of high quality juvenile salmon from a much smaller volume of freshwater than is possible using traditional hatchery technology; believes that the opening of Millbrook Hatchery has created 16 new skilled jobs in Shetland and that it will produce a total of five million juvenile salmon every year; acknowledges that Shetland, which it understands already produces around a third of Scotland’s farmed salmon, now has the potential to become self-sufficient in production of juvenile salmon for the first time; believes that the investment will reduce the carbon footprint of Shetland-produced salmon by reducing the need to transport fish by boat from the Scottish mainland; congratulates Grieg Seafood on what it sees as such a positive contribution to the local aquaculture industry, and wishes the company well with its plans.
