That the Parliament recognises that the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) has been awarded £1 million as part of the Sustainable Aquaculture Initiative; understands that this will be put toward research projects that will focus on addressing the key challenges faced by the aquaculture sector and involve scientists and researchers from across the university; believes that the multidisciplinary projects, which will span bioscience and environmental science, will focus on farming or cultivation in finfish, molluscs and crustaceans and are part of a national programme to build capacity across the aquaculture research sector; understands that the aquaculture industry is a key economic growth sector, which is worth around £580 million and rising each year, and believes that it has an important role in developing sustainably; praises the UHI on what it considers this endorsement of the standard and distinction of its research; congratulates it on receiving this award, and wishes the university all the best in its efforts to help ensure sustainable aquaculture stocks for society and the economy.
