The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the 144th Open Championship, which is taking place at the Old Course in St Andrews between 16 and 19 July 2015; considers that hosting the event will be a significant benefit to Fife’s and Scotland’s economy, with the championship expected to attract 200,000 golf fans and a £100 million boost to the national economy; understands that golf tourism is worth around £220 million to the Scottish economy annually and supports approximately 4,400 jobs; notes what it considers the forthcoming end of an era, with a final Open appearance for the five-time champion, Tom Watson, and hopes that this year’s Open will prove, once more, that there is no finer place for golf than the country that gave golf to the world.
