250th Anniversary of the Birth of Thomas Muir
The motion
That the Parliament celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Muir, considered the “Father of Scottish Democracy”; notes that he was tried and found guilty of sedition in 1793 and was banished to Botany Bay for 14 years; understands that his crime was to advocate universal voting rights and parliamentary reform and that, during his trial, he made dramatic use of the opportunity to speak out in favour of democratic equality for all people, and welcomes the forthcoming Thomas Muir reception at the Parliament on 23 September 2015 and the commemorative march on 3 October from Calton Hill to the Parliament, which is being organised by the Friends of Thomas Muir in his memory.
