The motion

That the Parliament notes that that 21 to 27 November 2015 is Scottish Adult Learners’ Week, which will also coincide with Book Week Scotland on 23 to 29 November 2015; recognises that Scottish Adult Learners' Week is a celebration of learners’ achievements across the country and Book Week Scotland is a week-long celebration of books and reading; welcomes these weeks working together to encourage people across the country to engage with reading for pleasure as part of their learning journey and to support people across Scotland, learners and confident readers alike, to participate in events and activities to seed and share a love of reading; understands that learners' reading successes are being celebrated through a Reading category in the Scottish Adult Learners’ Week Awards, jointly provided by Scotland’s Learning Partnership and the Scottish Book Trust and that the transformation that reading can have in people’s lives is being supported by sharing the hashtag, #ThankBooks, on the Book Week Scotland website; considers that raising adult literacy levels will give parents and carers the confidence to read with their children, which will introduce books and regular reading early on in a child’s development, which will play a role in the work to reduce the attainment gap in Scotland; celebrates that every Scottish library service is providing events for Book Week Scotland and every primary 1 child in Scotland will receive a Bookbug Primary 1 Family Pack; congratulates the four Reading Champions to be announced during the week who will work to grow reading communities around their host libraries, and encourages as many people as possible to get involved in Book Week Scotland and to celebrate the achievements of learners for Scottish Adult Learners' Week.
