World Prematurity Day 2015
The motion
That the Parliament notes that 17 November 2015 is World Prematurity Day; understands that 15 million babies are born too soon across the globe and that 60,000 are born prematurely in the UK each year; is concerned that children born prematurely may be disadvantaged for the rest of their lives due to poor understanding of their needs, and therefore congratulates Sarah Brown for launching a new £1.5 million study aimed at improving educational outcomes and life chances for premature babies; understands that the Theirworld Edinburgh Birth Cohort will track the development of 400 babies who are born before 32 weeks, following them into adulthood, and is aimed at studying the long-term effects of early birth to enhance learning and develop new approaches to help babies with a vulnerable start in life; commends what it sees as this positive development, and welcomes World Prematurity Day 2015 and the opportunity that it provides to raise awareness of the extra support needed for babies born too soon, too sick or too small in Scotland and across the world.
