Rail Fare Increase Hits Fife Commuters

The motion

That the Parliament understands with concern that rail passengers in Fife and across Scotland are facing increased fares well in excess of the rate of inflation; is further concerned that research by the UK’s biggest rail union, RMT, suggests that the cost of tendering and bidding for the ScotRail and Caledonian Sleeper franchises was over £53 million, or the equivalent of a 13% one-off discount on fares; understands that this £53 million is made of up of the costs of carrying out the tendering process that were incurred by both the Scottish Government and the bidders; shares the RMT’s belief that this news is insult to injury for passengers who are returning to work, often travelling on cramped, overcrowded trains, in the knowledge that their fares are to the Dutch state-operated ScotRail franchise, and supports the union’s campaign for public ownership of railways, in order to deliver a better deal for staff, commuters and everyone who uses the service.
