Scotland Needs more Foster Families

The motion

That the Parliament notes figures published by the Fostering Network on 7 January 2016 on fostering needs in Scotland; understands that over 800 foster families are needed to meet the needs of children in Dunfermline and across Scotland and more than 9,000 to meet the UK’s needs; understands that, in particular, there is an ongoing and urgent need for more foster families to provide homes for teenagers, disabled children and sibling groups;  is concerned that many children and young people who do find suitable foster care are often frequently moved from home to home, with a staggering 20% living with 10 separate families over their period in the care system and 40% of fostered teenagers already living with their third foster family since coming into care; supports the Fostering Network’s call for more foster families to come forward to help provide stable, caring and supportive lifestyles for some of Scotland’s most disadvantaged children, and encourages anyone who is interested in taking on this important role to visit couldyoufoster.org.uk, find their local fostering service, and contact them to find out whether they can foster.
