Congratulating Wales on Significant Increase in Organ Donors

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes reports that six out of 15 organ donations in Wales were carried out under the new opt-out system; understands that, in the first two months of the system coming into place, organs were donated by six people who would otherwise not have been donors; notes that the new rules came into effect in December 2015, meaning that people aged 18 or older who die in Wales after having lived in the country for at least 12 months are assumed to have consented to their organs being donated unless they have specifically opted out; believes that, in the first two months of the new system, six of the 15 people who donated their organs had neither opted in nor out; understands that there are currently 535 patients on a transplant waiting list in Scotland; regrets that hundreds of patients waiting for an organ transplant could have to wait years for a law change after MSPs narrowly voted down a bill that was seeking to introduce an opt-out system in Scotland; believes that the opt-out system is internationally recognised as an effective way of increasing rates of organ donation, and hopes that the Scottish Government commits to introducing such a system early in the next parliamentary session.
