Dealing with Mental Health Issues in the next Parliamentary Session
The motion
That the Parliament notes with concern the huge disparity in life expectancy between people with mental health issues and the general population reported by the Mental Welfare Commission; understands that the report states that, across high income countries such as Scotland, men with severe mental ill-health die around 20 years before men who are not affected and women die 15 years before they otherwise would; welcomes the six priorities that the Mental Welfare Commission hopes that the next Scottish administration will include in the next mental health strategy; agrees with the Mental Welfare Commission that more must be done to help children and young people with mental ill-health and also get faster access to support for them in their community; welcomes the work done by campaigners, practitioners and MSPs to raise awareness of mental health since the establishment of the Parliament, but considers that there is a huge amount of work still to be done to fully address this issue.
