Familial Hypercholesterolaemia

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the recent report, Saving Scottish Lives, Saving Scotland’s Money, Report on the advantages of implementing cascade screening for Familial Hypercholesterolaemia in Scotland, which was published by HEART UK; understands that, although familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a genetic heart condition that can lead to premature death or disability, it can be easily treated when diagnosed; believes that, while an estimated 10,400 people in Scotland, including in Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, have FH, only 400 have been definitively diagnosed following genetic testing; notes that the report calls for a national FH programme to better identify possible cases of FH in primary and coronary care units, the establishment of a joined-up system for registering patients and testing their relatives and for improved access to secondary care lipid clinics, and commends HEART UK on its report.
