National Women in Engineering Day

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates all those who took part in and arranged the inaugural National Women in Engineering Day, which was held on 23 June 2014; notes that the event was established by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to celebrate its 95th anniversary; further notes that it was formed in 1919 by women employed in engineering and technical positions during the First World War who subsequently wished to continue in such roles; understands that the event celebrated the work of female engineers and considers that it was successful in inspiring and encouraging girls to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and pursue careers as engineers, scientists and technical leaders; shares WES’s determination to increase awareness among women of the exciting job opportunities in this sector, to retain and support the development of female talent and to promote a diverse workforce, and hopes that initiatives such as National Women in Engineering Day will further enhance the participation and achievements of women in the industry.
