Celebration of CHYP’s 21st and Fire Station’s 25th Anniversary

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Council for Homeless Young People (CHYP) on its 21st anniversary, and the Fire Station Project on its 25th anniversary, both of which are run by Queens Cross Housing Association (QCHA); understands that the Fire Station Project started when QCHA purchased the old fire station building on St George’s Road and originally supported 13 young people who were homeless; notes that CHYP has operated from Wilton Street since 1971 and originally supported young homeless people through a volunteer peer mentoring system; further notes that CHYP joined QCHA in 2008 and, in 2009, CHYP and Fire Station joined together to become Queens Cross Youth Homelessness Service; understands that CHYP and Fire Station have helped more than 1,000 young people over 25 years and that the groups and young people have achieved various successes over the years, including walking the West Highland Way, completing Pedal for Scotland and the Pot of Soup project, where young people learn healthy eating and cookery skills and won an Evening Times Community Champions award in 2013; understands that current and former service users, volunteers and employees came together on 7 November 2014 at the Glasgow Film Theatre to celebrate the landmark anniversaries; further understands that, at this event, a premiere of a short film created by Claude Mutuyimana, himself a youth homelessness service user, about being young and homeless in Glasgow, was screened, and wishes the projects all the best for the future.
