The motion

That the Parliament notes that work is underway to begin building a war memorial in Neilston to honour local fallen soldiers; congratulates the Neilston War Memorial Association on, it considers, campaigning relentlessly since 2012 to make this memorial a reality; understands that this memorial has been made possible almost entirely due to the generosity of local people and local businesses who have donated money, attended dances, sold knitted poppies and organised car boot sales; notes that the Whitelee Windfarm Fund contributed £5,000; commends the exceptional fundraising efforts of Jimmy Higgins and John McGuire, who walked from Neilston to Vimy Ridge in France to raise much-needed funds; acknowledges that the local councillor and chairman of the association, Paul O’Kane, has cut into the ground at the memorial’s site along with Kyla Fergus from St Thomas’ Primary School and Joseph Kearney from St Luke’s High School, who both designed the memorial, which was made a reality by the Scottish artist, Tom McKendrick, and notes that construction should take 12 to 15 weeks and that the association is preparing a solemn dedication and unveiling.
