Parkinson’s Awareness Week, Making Scotland Parkinson’s-friendly

The motion

That the Parliament understands that there are around 10,000 people in Scotland who have Parkinson’s; believes that the condition often causes symptoms that people find embarrassing and notes that recent data from Parkinson’s UK suggests that around 5,000 people in Scotland with Parkinson's have experienced hostility and rudeness because of it; notes that the data also suggests that around one third reported being stared at, a quarter were mistakenly accused of being drunk, almost one in 10 reported said they were laughed at, 45% experienced depression and 55% reported anxiety; believes that hostility and a lack of understanding about the symptoms can have a very damaging impact on the mental health of people Parkinson’s; supports the call from Parkinson’s UK to create Parkinson’s-friendly communities, which are fully accessible and reduce isolation for people with the condition and their unpaid carers; believes that everyone can do their bit to make Scotland a kinder and more considerate place to live, and considers that this would make a huge difference for people with Parkinson’s as well as those with other health conditions and disabled people.
