Effect of Enforced Road Closures on Local Festivals
The motion
That the Parliament appreciates the contribution made by common ridings, ridings of the marches and galas to the economy and wellbeing of local communities across Dumfriesshire and the south of Scotland; notes that some have existed for several centuries whereas others were initiated in the early twentieth century; congratulates the organisers and participants whose dedication and hard work make what it considers these highly enjoyable events possible, but is concerned that Police Scotland’s policy of enforcing road closures and the attendant fees is threatening the continued existence of what it sees as these important local festivals.
